Men's Basketball: Concordia Tops Titans in Westmont Consolation Game

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Senior forward Ryne Murray (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) posted the 31st double-double of his career, but the Westminster College men's basketball team lost to Concordia (Neb.), 73-66, Wednesday night in the consolation game of the 34th annual Tom Byron Classic hosted by Westmont College in Santa Barbara, Calif.
Westminster falls to 2-8 on the year and Concordia, an NAIA team, improves to 9-6.
Murray posted team highs of 17 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Three other Titans scored in double figures, including sophomore forward Rob Briggs (Saxonburg, Pa./Knoch) with a season-high 15 points to go with six rebounds. Junior guard Max Spinner (Boca Raton, Fla./Boca Raton) came off the bench to score 11 points and freshman guard Ron Martino (Boardman, Ohio/Cardinal Mooney) bucketed 10 points and handed out three assists.
Porter Birtell led Concordia with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Tyler Byrd scored 17 points to go with eight rebounds.
Westminster outshot Concordia, 40.3 percent (25-62) to 37.3 percent (22-59), and both teams grabbed 38 rebounds apiece. Both teams also took care of the ball with the Titans committed 10 turnovers to Concordia's nine.
Concordia held 10-point leads on two occasions in the first half before leading 35-28 at halftime. After Westminster trailed by six points (44-38) with 13:15 remaining in the game, Concordia went on a 17-6 run to take its largest lead of the game at 17 points (61-44) with 7:08 on the clock.
Westminster continues its West Coast swing Saturday at 6 p.m. Eastern time when it plays Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the first day of the California Tech Holiday Classic.
