NEW WILMINGTON, Lawrence County-- The Old Main bell tower rises over the Westminster campus and serves as the symbol of Westminster College. The tower houses a set of 42 bells known as a carillon.
There are only two colleges in all of Pennsylvania that have the privilege of having such a wondrous instrument. The bells began as a set of twelve that were donated by William and Mary Duff. The original bells were crafted during the Great Depression in America, but because of financial difficulties, they never made it to their intended owners.
Instead Westminster's carillon was started, and today the tradition has grown and the love of the carillon continues at Westminster.
These bells mark the passage of time for Westminster students and faculty. They tell us that it's time to be in class…time to go to lunch. They call us to chapel and they bid us goodnight.
From far below, we hear the songs ring loud and clear. However, there are few that get to venture to the top of the tower. WCN's Thomas Miller takes our cameras inside the Old Main Tower where many people never go for a chance to see the carillon up close and in action.
